Bernard Shearer Sr. Obituary

Bernard “Bernie” Shearer, Sr., 87, of Mayport, died late in the evening of Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at his home following a period of declining health.

Born August 27, 1937 in Indiana, PA. ,he was the son of the late Wilbert and Myrtle Matson Shearer.

He proudly and honorably served his country in the U.S. Army.

On October 2, 1962, he married the former Judith Matlack. She preceded him in death on November 20, 2020.

Prior to retirement he was a heavy equipment operator for Matson Lumber.

He enjoyed target shooting with family and friends.

Bernard was a man of integrity, he always said what he meant and meant what he said. When he made a promise you knew he would come through.  He was an incredible judge of character and once he formed an opinion of you, well good luck in changing his mind. He was always right in his judgments though. He was not one to freely say” I Love You” and although it was seldom heard, when he did say it, it was a profound moment filled with sincerity and meaning. His love was evident in the quiet, steadfast ways he showed up for his family and the people he cared about. You could always count on him to be there when you needed him. Bernard was a passionate gun collector. He cherished going to gun raffles with his sons and grandsons any chance he had. He loved spending his days watching old westerns, especially the ones he had seen a million times and could recite every line by heart. He had an amazing sense of humor and could make anyone laugh, even when he wasn’t trying to. He was a man who loved his country and family above all else. He will live in our hearts forever.

Those surviving him are his sons, Darrell Shearer and Todd (DeeDee Krieble) Shearer; his daughters, Rhonda Berst, Tawni (Robert) Duffner, Tina (Doug) Johnson, Jaye (Brian) Miller and Michelle (Joseph) Renninger; his 24 grandchildren and 48 great grandchildren; his brothers, Albert Shearer and Larry (Jean) Shearer; and his sister, June Kostelnick.

In addition to his parents and wife he is preceded in death by his son, Bernard Shearer, Jr.; his daughter in law, Joyce Shearer his brothers, Leland Shearer, Leonard Shearer, Harland Shearer, Blair Shearer, Hazen Shearer and Homer Shearer; his sisters, Velma Swint; and his great grandchildren, Owen Shearer and Alexandria Edwards .
