Dr. James “Doc” Shields, VMD, 83, of Summerville, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 10, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family.
Born on March 12, 1942 in Brookville, Jim was the son of the late Blair E. and Helen DeMotte Shields. He married Catherine Whitesell on November 28, 1963 at Mt Pleasant Church, Summerville. She survives.
Jim was a graduate of Brookville Area High School; he continued his education at Penn State obtaining a B.S. in Dairy Science and at University of Pennsylvania earning the degree of Veterinary Medical Doctor.
Doc was the owner of Brookville Veterinary Hospital, caring for the regions large and small animals since 1968. He was a member of Smithtown Community Church in Falls Creek, AVMA, and Pa. Farmer’s Association. His pastimes included hunting and reading.
In addition to his wife, he was survived by his daughters, Jennifer Weible and Janice (Brad) Craig and sons, Andrew (Stephanie) Shields and Erin (Olusore) Shields; his grandchildren, Aleshia (Chris) Marshall, Keith Weible, Leslee Weible, Alan (Andrea) Weible, Tyler (Adrian) Craig, Brady Craig, Eden (Caleb) Snyder, Zoe Craig, Zayne Craig, Evan (Makenzie) Shields, Joseph Shields, Isaiah Shields and Ayomi Shields; great-grandchildren, Jalen, Cameron and Rosie Marshall, Hayden Harlon, and Elijah Craig; his sisters, Barbara Donahue, Nancy (Bob) Ladone, and Rebecca (Herb) Pennington; and extended family Thomas Weible and Terry (Sherry) Cook. Preceding him in death in addition to his parents was extended family, William “Butch” (Pat) Preston.
His family will receive friends on Friday, November 14, 2025,from 1-4PM and 6-9PM at Furlong Funeral Home, 50 Broad St., Summerville, PA. An additional hour of visiting will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025, from 10-11AM at Smithtown Church, Falls Creek, PA. A funeral service will follow at 11AM at the church with his son, Andrew Shields, officiating.Interment will follow at Windy Hill Cemetery, Corsica, Jefferson County.
