Mary Ellen Smith

Mary Ellen Smith, 96, formerly of Summerville, passed away Sunday evening, December 14, 2025 while at Jefferson Manor following a period of declining health. Born on May 26, 1929 in Brookville, she was the daughter of the late Gerald and Margaret (Stein) McHenry. She was a graduate of Brookville High School and was a member of the church of Christ. On July 16, 1948 in Belltown she married Harold Smith, Jr. He preceded her in death on May 26, 2004. She enjoyed spending time with her family and playing cards with her sisters. Her survivors include her sons, Tom (Sharon) Smith and Barry Smith; her daughter, Cheryl (Howell) Riley; her grandchildren, Chris (Teah) Smith, Brock (Mandy) Smith, Rachelle Plyler, Corry (Lisa) Riley, Eric Smith, Jarred Smith and Dylan Smith; as well as 11 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her grandson, Lance Riley; her brother, Richard McHenry; and her sisters, Marilyn Hulse and Donna Varner. Final arrangements for Mrs. Smith were entrusted to Furlong Funeral Home, 50 Broad St., Summerville, PA. A “Celebration of Life” will be held at a later date. Interment will be in Vandervort Cemetery, Clover Township, Jefferson County. Her family suggests memorial contributions be made in her memory to the Brookville church of Christ.
