Mildred M. Chatmon Norman, 100, of Kane died Wednesday, October 23, 2024 while at the Lutheran Home at Kane.
Born in Kane on September 16, 1924, she was the daughter of the late J.C. and Lealon Burton Chatmon.
A graduate of Kane Area High School where she was the first black female to become a member of the National Honor Society, she continued her education at the prestigious Harlem Hospital School of Nursing obtaining her BS, continuing on at Columbia University where she was awarded a Masters from Teachers College and a Masters in Arts.
On April 20, 1960 in New York, she married Andre’ T. Norman.
She spent her career as a nurse and Nursing Instructor. Prior to her retirement she held the office of Staff, Head Nurse, Nursing Supervisor and Clinical Instructor, Harlem Hospital Center and School of Nursing; Coordinator and Lecturer, Department Of Nursing Brooklyn College, City University of New York, Assistant Professor, Department of Nursing, City University of New York, Staten Island Community College: Associate Director Harlem Hospital Center of Nursing and Associate Director, Nursing Service and Nurse Recruitment Harlem Hospital Center. She had extensive experience in teaching and supervising students pursuing their Diploma, Associate and Baccalaureate degrees in nursing.
She was a member of The Riverside Church in New York, NY.
She was awarded the Distinguished Service Award 1982; Harlem School of Arts Humanitarian Award for Community Service in Harlem 1988. She was also elected the first black president, Theta ETA Chapter, Sigma Theta Tau, City College and Chi Eta Pi- Nursing Sorority.
Her personal Motto “God has blessed me with many talents, and he expects me to use them in His name and to help others, I only hope that through my work and interests that I do achieve that purpose.”
Her many interests included reading, and collecting bells, rare woods and dolls: playing piano, operas, ballets, most types of music, sketching and traveling.
Her beloved survivors include her husband, Andre’; her sisters-in-law, Agatha”Ann” Chatmon and Valerie Leiman; her numerous, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins; as well as her sisters-in-love, Beverly Billard and Betty Mason.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers, John ( Dorothy) Chatmon, Robert (Mary) Chatmon and George Chatmon; her nieces, Deborah Chatmon Davis and Tina Chatmon; and great nephew, Corey Chatmon.
Friends will be received from 11:30 AM until 1 PM . Services will follow at 1PM on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at Furlong Funeral Home, 140 Cherry St., Marienville, PA. A luncheon will follow at Marienville Methodist Church Social Hall catered by Bettina’s Restaurant.
A memorial service will be held in New York at a later date.
Interment will be on Monday November 4, 2024 at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Kane, PA.
Her family extends their heartfelt “Thank You” to her caregivers and staff of the Lutheran Home and UPMC Kane Hospital.
