Orin Stephen Best

Orin S. “Sonny, Duff, Papa” Best, 86, of Summerville, passed away Tuesday, August 25,2026 while at Allegheny General Hospital due to complication of a fall.

Born on May 28, 1940, in New Bethlehem, he was the son of the late William and Helen Reddinger Best.

He was a graduate of Redbank Valley High School and continued on to earn his bachelor’s from California University and his master’s from Edinboro University.

On May 13,1960 he married the former Darla Travis. She survives.

In 1997 he retired from Brookville High School as the Guidance Counselor.

His membership included the NRA and Ohnagdagon Society.

He was an avid hunter, enjoyed fishing, drinking with friendsand could damn near fix anything.

He was such a huge presence to his family and friends. His beady blue eyes guided them, made them laugh and cringe, and inspired them through 86 years of perpetual motion. If he liked you, he’d smile and say, “some of its magic, some of its tragic, but I had a good life all the way.” He was greatly loved by those that knew him well. It’s impossible to say here what his life meant to so many.

In addition to his wife, Darla, he is survived by his son, Stephen (Lisa) Best; his daughters, Kelly (Flint) Adkins, Sheri (Russ) Brodeur, Shawna Todd Sharp) Orzechowski and Michelle (Bruce) Ferry; his grandchildren, Cole, Zach, Wyatt, Aubrey, Jaden, Matthew, Dane, Emalie, Adeline, Rhea, Tyler and Caitlin; his great grandchildren, Trey, Addy, Chloe, Mason, McKenzie, Garrett, Ollie, Eowyn, Arlo, Jim, Liana, Soraya, Ascher and Kensington; and his sisters, Louise Fenstermaker and Mardi Means.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Shelby Best and Shirley Fenstermaker.

Furlong Funeral Home, 50 Broad St., Summerville had the distinct honor of providing the final arrangements for Mr. Best.

There will be no services held.
